RSAF Fighting Falcons

Peace Carvin I

In January of 1985, the government of Singapore ordered eight F-16/79 fighters and took an option for 12 more. The F-16/79 was a cost-reduced version of the Fighting Falcon powered by the General Electric J79 turbojet rather than the F100 turbofan. In mid-1985, it became apparent that the F100-powered version would be made available, and Singapore changed its order to eight F-16A/B Block 15OCU aircraft (four single-seaters and four two-seaters). This purchase was under the Peace Carvin I Foreign Military Sales program, and was intended to replace the ageing Hawker Hunters still serving with the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

Although all aircraft are Block 15 models, they actually have strengthened Block 30 airframes. The machines were initially delivered to Luke AFB, where the RSAF trains its F-16 pilots (see Operational Service below). Singapore also leased nine F-16A's previously used by the Thunderbirds flight demonstration team from 1993 to 1996, for training at Luke AFB, Arizona. The first F-16s were not transferred to Singapore until January 1990. Soon after delivery in 1990, two of the F-16A's were involved in a mid-air collision over the South China Sea. One of the F-16s was lost while the other made it back to base. Surprisingly, in 1994, when the Peace Carvin III order was announced, it was revealed that the F-16A/B's would be sold once the C/D's were operational. As reason it was quoted by Dr. Yeo, that it is expensive to support both the A/B and C/D's together (which is a rather strange argument since the RSAF still has the F-5S/T and the TA/A-4SU in service). A more logical solution would be to upgrade the F-16A/B's through the MLU program, which would bring the aircraft to more or less the same standards as the C/D airframes. Up to now the A/B models are still serving with the RSAF, although more C/D models have been delivered since. In December of 2004 a contract was signed between the Singapore and Thai government for the acquisition of the 7 remaining A/B airframes by the RTAF.

Peace Carvin II

SAF F-16D Block 52 #638 was the last aircraft delivered under the Peace Carvi II deal. All F-16Ds in this deal have the dorsal spine. (LMTAS photo)In 1993, Dr. Yeo Ning Hong, the Defense Minister, announced plans for 11 F-16C/D's (5 F-16C's and 6 F-16D's). In addition, he announced plans for two additional machines to replace the one lost over the South China Sea. When neighboring Malaysia ordered MiG-29N and F/A-18D aircraft, Singapore hastily reopened its fighter competition to include the F/A-18C/D. RSAF pilots were sent to China Lake to evaluate the Hornet. However, the Ministry of Defense stuck with the F-16C/D, but increased the order to 18 Block 52 machines (8 C's and 10 D's). The 1994 decision was reportedly based on price (Lockheed Martin offered a price of USD $23m). The 18 block 52 machines will be powered by the F100-PW-229 engine and will have a down rated version of the LANTIRN pod system (probably the Pathfinder/Sharpshooter combination). The aircraft are AIM-120 AMRAAM and AGM-88 Harm capable. The first of these 18 aircraft, a D-model serialled #638, was accepted by Chief of Defense Force Lt-Gen Bey Soo Khiangon on April 19th, 1998, during a rollout ceremony at Lockheed's Fort Worth facilities. Deliveries are scheduled to run until December. On August 14th, 1998, the first three Delta's and a single Charlie arrived at Tengah AB.

Lease & Buy

At the end of the F-16A training at Luke, a dozen USAF Block 52's were leased to be based at the same location for training. However, the USAF could not honor the lease as they needed the machines elsewhere. Instead, a deal was struck with Lockheed Martin to lease a dozen new-built F-16C/D Block 52's (4 Charlie-models and 8 Delta-models) with options to buy them later. The aircraft were leased for a 2.5 year period, for an estimated cost of USD $12.3m. In 1997, under Peace Carvin III, the RSAF's training capabilities in the US have expanded, including an extension of the training contract for Luke till 2018. Since it is very unlikely that LMTAS will lease aircraft for such an extended period, the RSAF has probably exercised its right to buy the 12 aircraft. The fact that LMTAS officially lists the Block 52 inventory of Singapore as 42 aircraft (12+18+12) seems to point in the same direction. Due to the fact that these aircraft were purchased directly from LMTAS, they do not fall under the normal FMS procedures and therefore do not have a Peace Carvin program number assigned to them.

(Photo by William Gilson)On October 29th, 1997, the government of the Republic of Singapore announced it would buy another 12 F-16C/D Block 52 aircraft, 10 C-models and 2 D-models. Delivery would start in 1999. Singapore's new F-16C/D order is worth USD $350 million, and includes besides 12 aircraft also support equipment, spare parts, training, mission equipment and other associated items. Rumor went that the order included an option for 12 more aircraft, but this never materialized. The 12 additional aircraft would be based at Cannon AFB for pilot training. On November 19th, 1997, the Pentagon said that Singapore seeks $287 million in services and support for its F-16C/D fighters including a new 20mm cannon, modifications and maintenance, training, spare parts and support equipment.

Peace Carvin IV

On July 21st, 2000, Singapore revealed that it was up to ordering another 20 F-16s. At first it was not clear whether it would be a mix of C-models and D-models, but eventually the Singapore government decided to make it an all D-model lot. Just like the D-models from the Peace Carvin III aircraft, these will be equipped with the extended spine to accommodate an extensive ECM-suite. Deliveries of the aircraft will commence at the end of 2003. The aircraft are of the Block 52 variant, powered by the Pratt&Whitney F100-229 engine. All aircraft were received before the end of 2004.

Modifications & Armament

The 10 F-16D Block 52 aircraft ordered in 1994 have the same dorsal fairing as the Israeli IF-16D and the sole VISTA aircraft. It is rumored to house the SPS-3000 EW suite. The dorsal spine were installed during regular routine assembly while these aircraft were on the production line in Fort Worth.

RSAF F-16D block 52 - note the dorsal spine, the IFF antennae in front of the canopy, and the Melmet Mounted Sight sensors just above the pilots (Photo by Edward Sou) It is rumored that the Israeli's have provided the RSAF with a first batch of short-range IR-guided Python 4 missiles. Recent pictures have shown the RSAF vipers flying with the DASH-3 HMS integration sensors attached to the canopy. DASH-3 (or any other HMDS) is essential to exploit the full potential of the Python 4, however the presence of the DASH-3 sensors does not confirm the availability of Python 4 missiles. Python4 can be fired without the HMDS and DASH can be employed to slave quite a number of other sensors (FCR, TGP, etc.) to the pilot's sight.
Singapore has acquired the AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile for use on its F-16 and Fokker 50 aircraft.

In view of neighboring Malaysia upgrading its MiG-29s allowing integration of the Vympel R-77 AR-homing AAM, Singapore acquired about 100 AIM-120 missiles. Previous requests for the AIM-120 by Singapore and other countries in the region were turned down by the US government until a similar system was introduced in the region. It is understood that the AIM-120 misseles are stocked in the US, and will only be shipped to Singapore when the state is threatened. The latest reports confirm these AMRAAM missiles being in-country.

Late again...

i know, i know...i'm a couple of days late and i said i would be consistant...well, been really busy...

first, i'll be going to Las Vegas tomorrow for a cross country (which is considered training time here) and will be there for the weekend...and then on the 14th of Apr, i was intending to go to LA but i guess things have changed there...may be going to NY instead and meeting a buddy there. Good thing is i had a contingency plan and one must always, ALWAYS have one cos...as murphy says...SHIT HAPPENS!

At first, i was kinda dissapointed and sad that i wasn't going to LA but now i think of it as maybe HE knows it is not the right time, or she's not the right one...so as he pleases...and weird thing about it is lately at night i have been praying hard for 'his will be done, not mine' and then this happens...what a sign...

I've been trugging though my flights lately, am a little bit rusty from not flying for a while...but so far, no major fuck ups as yet...so really pray that all things goes well and i finish up soon. I cannot wait to go back and get all the shit into place...

I was told that i have a big heart and that that's the reason i fall in love so easily...or moreso that's why i can love more than a normal individual...hmm...i buy that...but i guess when i think about it more i realise that the most important person in my life is my mum and if a girl cannot accept my mum living with me than too bad ...cos she's my number one cos all this while when the shit kept hitting the fan, i've been hers...call it oedipus complex or whatever you may, i don't really care...i call it being filial...of cos at times i think about moving away with the one i love and starting life anew...but think about it...the past does make the future present...

I miss my siblings and i wonder what they are up to on a daily basis, and i hope they think of me too...i really hope i am not missing out much on their lives and that when i return things will be back to normal and it will be like i never was away...i hope...let's start, Jie's in New Zealand working, ErJie is in her own world and getting a number 3 soon...and still in contact with my dad...which pisses me off big time, SanJie is planning to go to the UK, i think and i'm not sure but i pray she has a full time job now and supports mum, Rel's in Belgium studying and living the life i've always wanted...seeing the world experiencing new things...well, think of it...i am doing that too...just not the same way...Ricky went to Sispec and all i pray for him is to be happy and to find out soon what he wants to do for a career...Rome's a TP and saving up for his diploma. I pray God be with all my siblings and when they make decisions in life...esp the youngest two.

There are so many things for me to do back home and the more i think about it i realise the longer i stay here the more there is for me to do when i return. And then there is also talks that Malaysia wants to declare itself a muslim country...hmm...i really hope i will never get to use what i am learning here....esp when i get back and it's no longer a T-6A Texan, or T-39 Sabreliner, or a T-2 but a F-16D block 60...with the AIM 7 Sparrow, AIM 9 Sidewinder, AIM 120 AMRAAM, AGM 84 HARPOON & 88 HARM, PYTHON 4 and with the DASH 3...damn, that would not be a good day...

Well, let's just hope i never get to use it...for now...Wings of Gold...till next time...take good care people....ciaoz

The Sad Truth of Life...In the never ending quest for romance...

Had a really long week....simulators almost everyday...had a couple of tests this week...did pretty well...missed 1 question on one of them and 5 on another...but all is good...went to play billiards with Steven after friday dinner at this really good makan place called WUNAN...owned by a taiwanese...met a Singaporean lady who was there with her husband...nice to see a fellow Singaporean so far from home...i sucked at snooker...BUT it's been awhile since i last played though...but most of all this week, it seems to me that i have gone into combat mode...kept thinking about how modern warfare is applicable in everyday life...for example

"To knock out a man, physical damage does no harm. But mess with his head and you'll see him knock himself out!"

After analysing (pronounced "ANAL" lie zing) what was said, i begged to differ. I say, to destroy a man physically and mentally, destroy him emotionally! You see what i mean...combat mode... it's not me though, but have to adapt to survive right?

Watched a couple of good movies this week...'Remember The Titans' and 'Yours, Mine and ours' Both struck a cord with me...one was about brotherhood and the diluting of inter racial discrimination...how people from different backgrounds and upbringings can get along and work productively HAND IN HAND, if, kicked in the butt AND finding a common goal or should i say common enemy...the other good flick i caught is about having way too many kids to handle...and i know what that is like having 7 kids in my family...what you see on the show...the mess, chaos and fun..is not far from the truth... I miss home....

Victor Aponte...my class leader and new found buddy is a really awesome guy....easy to get along and talk to...he is a single dad and things must be tough for him. But being hispanic and having a very strong faith in God (he's catholic by the way) he has shown me what it is like to live...be happy and take things as they come...he is really a God sent...i think i can be a really difficult person to work with and get along but it seems God is really looking out for me...first, it was my roommate Jennifer Hine...sweet catholic girl and now it's Victor...I thank him for taking care of this unworthy servant...

Well, i got a test on monday then i'll be of to flight side to start with flying...cannot wait...i really hope i am ready by then...well, wish me luck and miss you guys...take good care..ciaoz

Yes, i am still in the "never ending" quest for romance and love...and be sure of this...if it ever comes knocking on my door...i'm grabbing it by the throat...for now...FOCUS!! Wings of Gold...and never throw away the past and keep looking into the future for it is our roots that makes us who we are...to look forward you must have you past close behind...JERM's 2 cents worth...ciaoz

What a long long long week...

There's so much now on my plate, i'm not sure if i can eat all...and even if i do, i'm not sure i'll be able to digest it...here's a quote i heard that i like...very much in fact...

God didn't make us with wings, we made the wings...so fly high and even low slow, the people below, they don't know...over the comms, sound all cool, they don't know the 'G's we pull...out of the sky we can easily fall, but way up there...we are indeed...ABOVE ALL! Fly fast, break all limits, with all those targets and all those digits...in God we trust, we must have faith, till we meet again...fly safe...

There...that's my toast when i get there...there's so much to do, so much to know...everyday, i learn something new...i'm just afraid i might forget...and then there are those limitations and emergency procedures to get down cold...hmm...next week will be a challenge...this weekend, i must catch up and be always a step ahead...I've been so busy, i don't have time for myself, or even have enough time to take it all in...need prayers...so whoever's reading this...say a short prayer for me yeah...

Now, got to rush off to service my car and give it a good scrubing...of cos by that i mean...going to top up my oils and fuel...and go for a car wash....haha..till we meet eye to eye...i miss you guys...ciaoz

Pictures of Bike models...

Biker Brothers as of 07 Mar 2006...

So much has happened...

well, it has been about 2 weeks since i last blogged my thoughts but i've been really busy...My buddy from Singapore, Jeremy Lim, got his wings and before he left we spent his last few days going through stuff, getting rid of stuff and packing a hell lot. And i also started my groundschool. There's so much to do. Have been staying late in the squadron to study and do up my charts. Been waking up as early as 6am everyday to go for classes and return home as late as 9pm almost everyday...and the coming week is so going to be worse.

Spent the weekend packing the house, washing the clothes, studying up...Went to the squadron on saturday to get ahead of my class and today, i just came back from Victor's place (class leader), went there to finish up some charts and got to know the fellow abit better...He's a good Catholic, single father who has it bad...he has so many things to juggle while finishing up the course and talking to him made me realise i really don't have it all that bad...

Came down with the flu, a very bad one. Even had a night where i had to wake up in the middle of the night cos i got chest pains...feeling a whole lot better now though. Had a good chat with Huimin as well, which didn't end too good...and with Rebecca as well, which also didn't end up too good. But one thing that made this whole week great was having to talk to Sharon. She's a really great gal, what can i say. Easy to talk to, cheers me up, and has really great views of life.

I don't think she knows it but she's very intellectual and her views on life are very different and unique...a breath of fresh air...a very interesting individual to have a really great conversation with. i think i might be getting a wee bit distracted by her...haha but focus...focus...main mission - get wings of gold...

So yeah there...oh yeah i also helped Jeremy sell his Mitsubitshi 3000GT. This one guy was offering Jemz 700 bucks and i told Jemz i'd help him fetch a better price...and i did...just a few days later...got it sold for 1200...so in just afew days, Jemz made 500 more...kinda proud of the fact though...but Jemz has really been a great brother...though i'm older...hahaha

Argh...i really got to do something about this cough...Pei Pah Kow....ok, need to go sleep and get up early tomorrow for classes again...must must must must must make some MORE my own time to pen down the happenings of the week...

things to do...wash my damn car, find out more places to pawn my stuff before i leave, study the NATOPS, finish my charts, study Emergency Procedures and limitations...work work work...so busy...all in the attempt to get my wings faster than usual...by Aug 06 hopefully...and yeah...forgot to add that i'm the first batch of Universal Hybrid Syllabus...meaning they tookout some flights and i will begin to fly on the weekend...meaning...getting my wings earlier than usual...my new word - SWEEEEEEEETTTTT!!!

oh..and there's NIIICCCEEE!!! too..hahaha till we meet again... yes, here are the pictures of the bike models i got...waiting for Ricky to take some pics of the models he has and send to me...RICKY!!!

Oh, and before i forget...I learnt something new this week. You know why you have to put the lid on when boiling male lobsters and not female? Well, here it is...when the male lobster knows he's being bolied, it will get together with the other male lobster, make like a ladder and help each other out of the pot...whereas female lobsters, when the heat gets to them, the female lobster hang on to the other female lobsters, preventing them from getting out (The "if i go down, all of you will go down with me'" attitude)...For real...go read up on it yourself...freaky but true...guys just seem to instinctively know about camaraderie

Jermz out!
